A Brief History of Credit Cards

1887  The concept of using a card for purchases was described by Edward Bellamy in his utopian novel Looking Backward
1920s Appeared in the United States to sell fuel to a growing number of automobile owners
1921 Western Union had begun issuing charge cards to its frequent customers
1950 Ralph Schneider and Frank X. McNamara, founders of Diners Club, invented the concept of customers paying different merchants using the same card
1958 American Express created a worldwide credit card networ
1958 Bank of America launches the BankAmericard in Fresno, Calif., with an innovative “revolving credit feature.
1966 MasterCard came into being
1970 Visa is incorporated in the state of Delaware in 1970 as National BankAmericard Inc. (NBI).
